His Journey

The Story Behind Songs Smith

The Beginning1982 — Tennessee
Born Into Music

Fenton grew up in a small Tennessee town where music was never optional — it was oxygen. By age eight, he had taught himself three chords on a battered acoustic that belonged to his grandfather. Music wasn't something he chose. It chose him.

The Dream2000s — Nashville
Nashville & The Breaking

He moved to Nashville with $400 and a guitar. He played small bars, passed a tip jar, and wrote songs late into the night. The gigs dried up. The rent didn't. He became a mechanic. For nearly a decade, the guitar sat in the corner — silent, dusty, waiting.

"I had given up. I thought that chapter of my life was over. I didn't know the most important song I would ever write was still waiting for me."

The Gift2006 — Nashville
Clara

Clara walked into the bar on a rainy Tuesday — one of maybe twelve people in the crowd — and she was the only one who stayed for every single song. They were married two years later. She never stopped believing in his music. She was the reason the guitar never got thrown away.

The LossSpring 2020
A World That Shattered

In spring 2020, Clara contracted COVID-19. She was 38 years old. Within weeks, she was gone. Fenton's world didn't just stop. It shattered. For weeks he couldn't speak, couldn't play, couldn't do anything but sit in the silence of the home they had shared.

The Turning Point2020 — The Night Everything Changed
A Gift He Could Never Give Her

Weeks later, Fenton sat alone surrounded by her photographs. Without thinking, he reached for the dusty guitar. His hands were stiff. His eyes were full of tears. But the words came. He wrote about her eyes. About the way she said his name. About the smell of her coffee in the morning.

He wrote her a song. A gift he could never give her.

He played it at her memorial. A friend whispered — "Fenton, that song was more her than any photograph will ever be."

"I know what it means to wish you had said more while you still had the chance. Let me write that song for you — before that moment is gone."

The Mission2020 — Present
Songs Smith Is Born

Fenton founded Songs Smith because of Clara. Over time, a quiet circle formed — former Nashville colleagues who work anonymously: a session guitarist, a classically trained arranger, a soul and gospel vocalist. Out of respect for Clara, they remain anonymous. They simply show up, pour their hearts in, and let the song speak for itself. Clara's memory is in every note.

What He Believes

Fenton's Philosophy

🎸
Every Story Has a Melody

Buried inside every person's story is a unique musical frequency. Fenton's gift is finding it.

❤️
Emotion Over Perfection

A technically perfect song that doesn't make you feel anything is worthless. He always chooses the lyric that makes you cry.

Songs Outlast Everything

Flowers die. Cards fade. But a song lasts generations — an heirloom to be passed down, not thrown away.

🤝
Your Trust is Sacred

When someone shares their most precious memories, they place extraordinary trust in Fenton. He treats that as the most important part of his work.

"I gave up on music for years. I thought that dream was behind me. It took losing Clara to bring me back to the guitar. If you have someone who deserves a song, let me write it for you. I know what it means to wish you had said more while you still had the chance."
